I Want to Switch My Career to STEM or Medical. But How?

STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Math.  It is not just a fad word, but it is where most high paying jobs lie.  What if you were not particularly fond of math when you were in school and never programmed a computer?

Same applies to medical field jobs, you have to go back to learning mode in order to qualify.  Costs in both time and tuition are so formidable to embark on traditional learning journey.  You have to think out of box to achieve your goals.  And you need some help and guidance to blaze the trail.  That’s where we, at New Knowledge,  want to be to fill that role.

Bold and Determined

First you have to commit, in order to turn a whim into a goal and reality. Be prepared and be realistic about the time and effort that entails.  It will not be a few weeks’ trek; it could take months or even a year or two.  You also need to research in detail what specific sub-field you want to specialize in. Today’s STEM jobs or medical jobs are incredibly specialized.  You need to find areas that you are passionate about so you can withstand the toil leading to realizing your goal.  Also talk to professionals working in the area and get pointers to programs that can train you for the role.

Fill in Gaps

Once you are ready to plunge in the water, here goes the “Wait a minute” moment: you might be missing something.  Naturally for one who wants to scale Mount Everest you need be well equipped with an oxygen tank, many gears, and most of all a plan and a map for the best path.  We, at New Knowledge, would like to be that assistant, that sherpa,  helping you fill in the gaps, getting the gears and most of all forming a detailed and effective route to reach your goal. Whether you need a refresher on math or learn some basic programming skills, or learn some chemistry we will be there for you and find resources to help you overcome what is in your way.

Get the Right Certificates

Certificates have become an alternative way for people to learn the skills needed for a STEM job without enrolling in a degree program at a conventional school. However, not everyone can learn and benefit from certificate programs.  Unless you have some prior experiences in STEM, most likely you need to fill in some gaps in knowledge and skills before starting your journey to earn the certificates. For example, you want to get a system security certificate as there are so many unfilled jobs in that area.  But if you have not studied computer architecture, network or programming languages, the roles you can fit in this track will be limited.  You need to select the  certificate program which might not depend on these prerequisites.  After you get some working experience in the security area and manage to fill the knowledge gaps you will be able to obtain more advanced certificate.  It is wonderful that you have an array of certificate programs to select from different tech companies, and you need to be an educated customer to choose the right ones and sequence for yourself.  Choose wisely and carefully.
